Research

Research at TMU Linguistics department spans from theoretical core of phonology, syntax, and semantics to experimental linguistics. Language acquisition, language disorders, language processing and their neural underpinnings are of special strength. Both faculty and students are highly productive independently in respective areas and at the same time working closely in tandem, based on the philosophy that research questions are informed by linguistic theory and should be tested empirically. Currently three large-scale projects are running in our department funded by the Japanese government and Tokyo metropolitan government, i.e., Developmental brain sciences of infants’ speech perception, Acquisition of syntax in school-aged populations, and Adolescent mind and self-regulation.

Facilities

The department houses excellent facilities exclusively for students and faculty pursuing linguistic research. Our Cognitive Neuroscience of Language Laboratory includes eye-tracker, two 128 channel event-related potentials (EEG/ERPs), two 32 channel EEG/ERPs, near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and mobile neuroimaging laboratory for carrying out neuroimaging experiments both locally and remotely. Magnetic resonance imaging facility (MRI) is also available at Arakawa campus. We have strong ties with local elementary schools and junior high schools and benefit from a long-standing partnership though various activities.
