Note:
Journals are available for temporary loan only.
When no staff are present, you cannot be registered as a new user,
and no items can be loaned to a non-specialist user.

<Method> (actions to be taken by the borrower)
 (1) Scan the barcode for either regular loan or temporary loan
 (2) Scan the barcode on your library card
 (3) Scan the barcode on the book
 (4) Scan the barcode for the loaning process

<Returns>
*Leave items on the book trolley at the library entrance
Put items in the green book slot beside the entrance when the library is closed
(Library staff will return items to the shelves after the return process is completed)

<Extensions> [Specialist faculty=multiple times; Students=1 time only]
*Show items you wish to continue borrowing to a library staff member
(the staff member will process your request)
If you have in your possession any overdue, or there is a reservation for the item,
you will not be able to extend the period.

<Reservations>
*If the items you wish to borrow is on loan, you may ask one of the library staff members to make a reservation.
(You will be notified by e-mail when the item becomes available.)

The item will be held for you for a period of one week after the e-mail is sent.
You must visit the library within that period.
The reservation will be cancelled after one week.


**Persons from outside the university may only browse the collection.
Notify the library staff when you come in.
If you are an external user, please write your name down in the record book.


How to get to the collection

 Look up the correct information
 -Search MathSciNet (database provided by the American Mathematical Society)
 Accurate information on books and journals can be obtained here.
 When an online journal is available for use click on Article -> Link to paper

 Is the item available at Tokyo Metropolitan University (including other campuses) ?
 Where is the item located in the Mathematics library ?
 -Search the Library's Web OPAC

 If the item is not found at Tokyo Metropolitan University, don't give up yet.
 Mutual use agreements have been made with libraries of other universities,
 so items can be borrowed and copies requested from those other universities.
 Enquire with the Central Library for details.



●Layout of the Mathematics Library

 0) New arrivals corner [To the left right after entering the library]
  For a period of one week, new books and journals can only be used within the library
 
 1) Books [On the right]
  Around 80% of the books are western books. Japanese books are at the very back.
  Most books are organized on the shelves in alphabetical order according to the family name of the primary author.
  Books by the same author are organized in alphabetical order according to title.

  -Author - Western - A-Z
  -Author - Western - etc. -> Books with no titles on the spine, in order of title
  -Complete Works -> Alphabetical order by author
  -L.N. (Lecture Notes) -> Alphabetical order by university name
  -Series -> Series name, No.

  -Author - Japanese - A-Z -> Alphabetical order (青木=Aoki, アルティン=Artin)
  -Author - Japanese - etc. -> Books with no titles on the spine, in order of title

 2) Journals [On the left]
  Alphabetical order according to name of the journal (both Western and Japanese)

  Stack runner 
  -Russian -> Russian language magazines
  -Bulletins -> Donations from other universities
  -Information-related -> Information-related Japanese journals

 3) Miscellaneous
  -CD-ROM, microfilm, video, report collections (beside stack runner), etc.



●Computer corner

 There are four Macintosh computers and one Windows machine.
 Each(except Windows machine) is connected to the printer and can be used to browse electronic journals.



●A few observations and cautions

 -If you are a first-time user, a user outside the specialty or from outside the university:
  Notify library staff when you come in.

 -Put your belongings in a locker
  In order to avoid theft, keep bags and large items in the lockers.
  The lockers require a 10 yen deposit which is returned when you return the key.
  Many people get up and walk around leaving their belongings in their carrels, but we advise you not to do this.

 -No food or drinks in the library
  This includes bottled drinks.

 -How to search for books and availability
  If you have questions please ask a member of the library staff.
