About us

The TMU Department of Language Sciences is one of Japan’s leading centers for the scientific study of language. Three distinctive characters contribute to its uniqueness among leading undergraduate and graduate programs. First, the focus of research and teaching is on theoretical and experimental linguistics. We pursue this interest by combining current theoretical research in phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics with state-of-the-art research in psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, and developmental brain sciences. Second, we house a laboratory exclusively devoted to cognitive neuroscience of language that can take care of a wide range of populations from infants to elderly people as well as from normal individuals to impaired patients. Students can acquire various advanced behavioral and brain-imaging techniques, including eye trackers, high-density EEG/ERPs, NIRS, fMRI, and TMS. Third, we maintain strong ties with society. The results of our cutting-edge researches contribute to the field of language teaching and assessment in foreign language education and language treatment in impaired populations. These diverse activities of scientific inquiry lead to a firm and fertile ground for interdisciplinary research on language structures and their functions as a unique property of human being.
