English Village 2017

はじめに

首都大学東京・理工学研究科では、理系大学院生を対象として様々な国際教育に取り組んでいます。ここでは今年度に実施されるEnglish Village 2017について説明します。

English Village 2017はPart IとPart IIの二つのプログラムで構成されています。Part I（２０１７年６月〜１０月）の全１２回のプログラムでは、主に語彙強化や会話演習、プレゼンの練習などを行います。Part II（２０１７年１０月）の全４回のプログラムでは、科学論文のリーディングとライティングの強化を目指します。

留学や国際会議、インターンシップ、論文執筆などで使う実践的な英語を身に付けたい人は是非参加して下さい。もちろん、純粋に英語に興味があるだけで参加することも可能です。

対象

• 主に首都大学東京の理系の学部４年生および大学院生（学部３年生までは要相談）
• 平成２９年度の「派遣留学生経済支援制度」（学部４年生および大学院生）や「海外インターンシップ体験」（大学院生）を利用する学生は、原則として必ず受講して下さい。
• 平成２９年度の「教育改革推進事業」（通称：理工GP）の支援で海外に派遣される大学院生にも強く推奨します。
• Part IとPart IIはそれぞれ全回に出席することを前提とします。

Part I (ポスター)

• 日程：全１２回
  （前半）６／２１、６／２８、７／５、７／１２、７／１９、７／２６（全て水曜日）
  （後半）９／２０、９／２７、１０／４、１０／１１、１０／１８、１０／２５（全て水曜日）
• 時間：１７：００〜１８：３０（９０分）
• 場所：原則として１１号館２０２号室
• Instructor: David G. Spurvey
• Course Goals/Objectives:
• Using a Student-Based approach we will develop the students’ conversation skills, particularly speaking. The focus will be on increasing confidence and communication fluency through improvements in pronunciation, conversation initiative, response time, real-time listening and general verbal flexibility and fluency.
• Prepare students for a brief, presentation/speech in English in front of their peers. We will develop the students’ organizational skills, non-verbal/body language abilities and overall persuasive demeanor for public presentations in English.
• Student Outcomes:
• Students will be evaluated on their conversation and communication skills by way of a short, one to one, interview with the instructor at the conclusion of the course.
• Students will be required to create, organize and perform a 2-4 minute presentation/ speech in English. They will be evaluated on the content and delivery of the presentation.
• Class Format:
• One hour of each class will be devoted to the development of conversation skills and general listening and speaking abilities. This will mainly be accomplished through pair and group work practice utilizing role-plays, model conversations, listen and repeat drills, pronunciation exercises and question-answer type call-and-response activities.
• Half an hour of most classes will be used to focus on speech/presentation skills as well as the actual production of the students’ final speech/presentation.
• Materials:
• The instructor will make use of select chapters/units from the following texts: "Speaking of Speech", "Talk Your Head Off", "Let’s Talk About It", "New Headway, Pre-intermediate", "Northstar 2: Listening and Speaking"
• The instructor will also use various other materials as the need arises.

Part II (ポスター)

• 日程：全４回
  １０／１６（月）、１０／１８（水）、１０／２０（金）、１０／２３（月）
  
• 時間：１４：４０〜１６：４０（１２０分）
• 場所：８号館３０４号室（１０／２０のみ３０１号室）
• Instructor: Glenn C. Paquette（パケット道場）
• 目標：受講者は科学論文執筆の基礎を身につける。
• 概要：科学論文執筆の基礎を講義する。「科学論文とは何か」を出発点として、科学論文の書き方を徹底的に説明する。科学的な考え方をもとにして研究成果を発表するにあたって最も効果的な論文構成や議論展開を目指す指導を行う。また、科学論文に適した英語の正しい表現法を教える。
• 宿題・予習：
• 英語の表現法をテーマとした宿題
• 約1〜2ページの研究論文の執筆
• 講義の形式：講義は科学論文の書き方について実用的な知識を身につけさせることを目標にする。宿題とクイズは日本人にとって間違いやすい英単語・表現を対象とするものです。その解説ではありがちな誤りの原因となる英語についての誤解を明らかにし、誤りの解決方法を説明する。また、受講者が書いた論文を細かく分析し、その改善法について指導を行う。
