Study Tours of Civil Engineering Facilities for International StudentsHEADLINE

We have been running a new project from 2013, “The Study Tours of Civil Engineering Facilities for International Students under the Asian Human Resources Fund Program”.
This “Study Tour” aims to broaden our students’ view and draw on their experiences by visiting various important facilities and infrastructures in Japan.
Furthermore, sometimes we try to invite students from other projects in the tours. We believe that would help our international students to establish meaningful connections between them, both for their study and life in Japan.

4th Tour; The Facility Tours of Port and Airport Research Institute

Date : June 26
Location: 3-1-1 Nagase, Yokosuka-shi, Kanagawa

We visited Independent Administrative Institution, ‘Port and Airport Research Institute’ for our 4th tour.
This Institute aims at improving technology development relating to effective and efficient development of port and airport by achieving investigation, research and technology development on port and airport development, and we toured some of their facilities: the world’s largest “Hydro-Geo Flume” which can be used to verify the mechanism of a disaster striking breakwaters or seawalls including ground motion and structure destruction, the world largest “Underwater 3D Shaking Table” capable of generating seismic motion of up to double the gravitational acceleration, the “Large-scale Testing Facility” for investigating the mechanical properties of port, coast and airport structures and their components by conducting structural loading tests on the large-scale models, and so on.
Besides, we could have a chance to get lectured about “D-Runway of Tokyo International Airport”, which is a rare example in the world, adopted a hybrid structure consisting of piled pier and reclamation fill because some part of its runway is located in a river mouth.
In this tour, we learned about the researches on disaster prevention and mitigation that causes serious influences over almost all aspects of our life, and the strategic maintenance management plan of our airport facilities.
